THE EXERCISE

The following excerpt from the Portfolio Pack sets the scene:

The inhumation cemetery of Allemenschen has been discovered by aerial photography in advance of a motorway project. There appear to be about 500 graves affected by the motorway project, occupying an area of about 80 m east-west by 12 m north-south. Each grave has been given a unique ID number. The resources (time, money, and personnel) are available to excavate 10% of the cemetery.

In this course you will select a sample of the site for excavation, then ‘excavate’ your chosen sample using a spreadsheet, analyze certain aspects of the data, and present your findings to the other groups in your ‘hour’. The details of each stage are given on separate sheets.
